The Artists: 21 Practitioners in New Zealand Contemporary Art is the fourth in a series serving as a snapshot of the contemporary art scene as represented by Sanderson Contemporary Art.
The clean minimal design frees the images to breathe on the page and invites contemplation. More than 100 full-colour images showcase the work of local and international artists across a range of media, materials, themes and preoccupations.
This edition contains the work of artist Brit Bunkley, including Avondale spider sculptures in situ for his video installation The Huntsman. The gentle, surrealist landscapes painted on French linen feature from Auckland-based artist Candi Dentice; the sinuous sculptures of Ray Haydon are as striking on the page as the gallery wall, and the fog-like atmosphere of Alan Ibell’s paintings retain their mystique.
The words – essays courtesy of leading art historians, writers and curators – augment the experience without interrupting personal interpretation. The diversity of viewpoints creates an absorbing survey of current critical discourse to read alongside portfolios of the artists’ work.
